Katie Morin’s sister is my name to many people. My sister Katie has always been the favorite of the family and I have always lived in her shadow. She is twenty one months older than me and very strong willed. Katie has swam her entire life and I have always been there along her side. I have spent countless hours in the hot, sticky, and chlorine smelling pools around New England. My sister and her swimming career is one of the biggest influences in my life in and out of school, because of her I have experienced new places and grown closer with my mother as well as learn more about myself through her.
I have been too many places because of my sisters swimming career. She traveled a lot as a swimmer and my mother and I attended all the meets. One of my favorite meets takes place at the international swimming hall of fame pool in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. This meet has some very fast swimmers including the famous Ryan Locte and other Olympians from around the world. Seeing these athletes reminded me about all the hard work that goes into being really good at something and inspired me to do better in school. I also got to travel to Princeton New Jersey to see the Ivy League championships and visit the historic campus as well as visit the Princeton art museum. My visit to the Princeton art museum helped me in school because it allowed me to see more pieces of art including some that drastically changed my own art. This helped me with my schooling because it helped me in my advanced placement art class.
As a child I always preferred the country to the city and often feared the strange sights and smells that came along with the city. That all changed when my sister started to swim out of the pool at Brown University. Brown is located in the urban environment of Providence. When Katie was at swim practice my mother and I would go out into the city and over time I became more familiar with the city and felt more comfortable. My mother and I used to walk to Thayer street where we would often eat there or at the local Whole Foods market. As my sister became a better swimmer she started to swim in the pool at Harvard University and I got to experience Boston. With Boston came the subway and more interesting people. I quickly got over my fear of public transportation and learned to love the historic city. my experience with the city helped me when I was in school because I was not as sheltered as some of my peers and it allowed me to see the world differently e I learned a lot about history, from going to Faneuil hall and walking the freedom trail.
Through all my experiences at my sisters swim meets and practices there was always someone alongside me, my mother. My mom was always with me experiencing all the new places and putting in her own knowledge of the area to make me feel more at home. My mother and I got to experience things like lying on the beach, going to Disney together and riding the swan boats in the Boston public garden. My mother often helped me with my homework when we were at practice or together at meets. My mother’s help with my school work inspired me to be and art teacher. My mother and I have a strong relationship now because of all the time we spent together when I was younger.
My sisters’ swimming has allowed me to become self-aware. I learned that it takes a lot of time to become good at something. I also learned that sports were not something that I wanted to focus my time and energy on instead I wanted to spend that time and use it to make friends and create emotional bonds with others. I also wanted to spend that time working on my school work and improving on my art. My sisters swimming career also lead me to learn about the world and how it works. Swimming let me and my mother spend quality time together that I would not have otherwise had and because of that I became more aware of the relationship that my mother and I have. I chose to go to University of Rhode Island because I saw what pain the high price of my sisters college put my family through and I didn't want to do that to my family also so I decide to go to a school in state for less money. This is something that I learned from my sister.
I have learned so much because of my sisters and her love of swimming, because of her swimming career, I got to experience different places and enjoy the city more. I got to spend more time with my mom and make a strong relationship with her because of the amount of time that we had we had when Katie was swimming. My sister and her swimming experience have had such a large impact on my life because it allowed me to explore new places, become closer with my mother and learn about myself.
